Independence Day with Jimmy Flame and the Sexxy Boys at The Comet

It's been years since I've been to the Comet Tavern, but I just haven't had a good reason to go.  But now I have a reason to go.  Jimmy Flame and the Sexxy Boys are playing at the Comet tomorrow night, Saturday, July 4.  They are loud, they are rock 'n roll, they are punk, they put on an incredibly fun show, and I always have a good time at a Jimmy Flame show.   I can't think of a better way to celebrate my country's independence than to get tinnitus and have beer spilled on me.   Like Jimmy Flame would say, "Oow!"

2nd Annual Capitol Hill Community Garage Sale Day

You KNOW there will be some nifty, quirky, funky finds at the 2nd Annual Capitol Hill Community Garage Sale.  Basically, the way it works is everyone who lives in Capitol Hill who wants to have a garage sale registers on the Capitol Hill Garage Sale website (deadline for registration:  June 10).  Then everyone registered has their garage sale on the same day.  This year it will be on Saturday, June 13

The concept of having a neighborhood garage sale works great for patrons because the Capitol Hill Community Garage Sale  provides a map of where all the garage sales are located, so a person can save gas and time by being able to stick to one neighborhood and easily find garage sales.

I have been doing a little garage sale shopping around Capitol Hill the past couple of weekends, and I have found some great stuff.  In a quirky downtown neighborhood, garage sales are bound to have some interesting items for sale.  So far I have purchased a zebra print area rug (asking price $10, haggled down to $8), brand new picture frame ($.0.50), ceramic soap dispenser ($0.50), and one unopened large bag of cotton balls ($0.25).  Yes, I bought a bag of cotton balls at a garage sale.  I'm nearly out of paper towels so I'm holding out for June 13 to see if I can find a roll of paper towels at a garage sale.  Hey, you never know, and it doesn't hurt to save a buck or two when you can.

Location:  Capitol Hill (go to www.capitolhillgaragesale.com for map when available)
Date and Time: Saturday, June 13, all day (Check www.capitolhillgaragesale.com for start and end time when available)
Price:  Free.  Bring cash for purchases.

Crispin Glover!

I generally fear celebrities because they are nuts, but there is one celebrity who I like.  Granted, he is also a little strange, but I am in love with him and his work:  Crispin Glover

Crispin Glover is famous for being an actor in cult classics such as River's Edge and Rubin and Ed, and he has also played key roles in the blockbusters Charlie's Angels and Back to the Future.  He is one of few artists who has been able to maintain his indie status while trying out his craft in the mainstream.  He is also known for his quirkiness.  I have heard rumors that he is a collector of glass eyes.

Aside from a successful acting career, Crispin Glover also performs spoken word, and this weekend he is performing live at the NW Film Forum in Capitol Hill and presenting his movie, It's Fine!  Everything's FineEverything's Fine is a horror movie and sequel to What is It?  Beware:  this movie looks really disturbing, so leave the kids at home if you want to see it, m'kay?  Or bring the kids, but only if you are a lousy parent.

Crispin Glover will be doing an introduction and live dramatization of the movie in conjunction with Crispin Glover's Big Slide Show.

I saw a version of Crispin Glover's Big Slide Show about 10 years ago in San Francisco, and it was quite entertaining.  It included a short movie, starring Crispin Glover as a small town boy who wanted to win the local talent show by singing along to a boombox while in drag as "Olivia Neutron Bomb."  Then there was a slideshow, and I remember there being some sort of emphasis on pelts, which was a topic of his book being released at the time.  Beaver pelts.  You must be open to the quirky and offbeat to enjoy this show.

More information about the show on KEXP's blog.  On the KEXP blog post, you can also play a short audio clip of Crispin Glover explaining some details of the show.  Note how he introduces himself as "Crispin Glover Dot Com."
