Punk Show Tonight at Mars Bar
Is there a bar called Mars Bar in every city in the US? I'm asking because I just got back from a long trip that included a few days in NYC. Sure enough, there is a punk rock dive bar called Mars Bar in East Village, which is totally unrelated to the Mars Bar here in Seattle. Is it as cool as Mars Bar in Seattle? I can't say for sure, but I can say that Mars Bar in Seattle is cleaner.
I guess Mars Bar in Seattle is technically called Cafe Venus and the MarsBar, but everyone I know calls it Mars Bar.
You know, the greatest thing about being a blogger is I can start off a post by posing an overgeneralized and under-researched question and then go on some random tangent and it just doesn't matter.
My friends Marzi and RJ told me about the show at Mars Bar tonight and I'm going, because if they say a show is going to be good, I believe them. They have advised me to go to many punk shows in recent years and they haven't let me down yet. Bands playing tonight are Heavy Guerrilla, Brewtal Thirst, and Joey Piss Drunk. The show starts at 9pm and there is a $6 cover.
Cafe Venus and the MarsBar is located at 609 Eastlake Ave E in Seattle near REI.
Independence Day with Jimmy Flame and the Sexxy Boys at The Comet
It's been years since I've been to the Comet Tavern, but I just haven't had a good reason to go. But now I have a reason to go. Jimmy Flame and the Sexxy Boys are playing at the Comet tomorrow night, Saturday, July 4. They are loud, they are rock 'n roll, they are punk, they put on an incredibly fun show, and I always have a good time at a Jimmy Flame show. I can't think of a better way to celebrate my country's independence than to get tinnitus and have beer spilled on me. Like Jimmy Flame would say, "Oow!"
Jugglers, Rappers, and Aerialists.. Oh My!
I received a press release that kind of doesn't make sense, but maybe I'm just too simple to understand the deeper meaner. In fact, it seems like a spam email, but it is not. I have a great appreciation for creative ways of promoting events, and I as read through this press release, I realized the press release is promoting what sounds like a really fun event filled with jugglers, wrestlers, aerialists, and live music this Sunday, March 16, at the Re-bar. Read for yourself:
Once in a time, people had no reason to fear the dark. Then the world went dark. They had no reason to worry about loneliness. Then they were alone. They had no reason to worry about food, shelter, and warmth....until there was none. The Man with the Big Smokey Hat, and his son Charlie Death crippled the world we knew. They gave us reason to worry...but those reasons are vanishing as we find new communities. We gain help in rebuilding. We gain family to make us strong. We gain reasons to again rejoice. Get Loweded, the traveling celebration of hope, life and survival helps us rejoice. Get Loweded is returning to celebrate that nectar of the gods that has become out bread, drink and bond in this post apocalyptic world. Get Loweded is returning when the lunar cycle hits March 16 to celebrate the birth of that Nectar and it's creator St. Patrick Swayze!
Created in his roadhouse in 1933, the nectar became a central point to bonding, community and gathering....much as it is now! And how we will celebrate it! We have found a collection of talents in our travels the last month to dazzle and amaze the peoples of the Emerald City among them:
Billy the Fridge: probably the greatest person you know. If you don't know him, he is probably the biggest void in your life, yet to be filled. Seriously, you love him... even if you don't know it yet. Large in stature and mic skills, Billy will amaze you.
Michele Frances: Michele Frances can fly. She is exempt from the ancient laws of gravity.
Former members of SSP: Before the apocalypse, there was a group of performers who held staged feats of combat theater. They will show you skills to use in the this crazy world of ours against mutants, Texans and bandits.
Matthew Swope: Matthew Swope juggles...incredibly well and excitingly awesome.
The Rebar is one of my favorite clubs in Seattle because it's got a lot of character and it hosts some unique performances. And by character, I mean it's a little divey in a really good way. The venue attracts a wide variety of people ranging from breakdancers to drag queens to rockers to whatever. I have never had a bad time at this venue. On other nights at the Re-bar, you can also check out Dina Martini's drag show, which has become a staple of Seattle's subculture over the past two decades.
Event: Get Loweded Gets Apocalyptic: the Birthday of Booze
Date and Time: March 16, 2009 9pm
Price: $8
Location: Re-bar (1114 Howell St.)
Pirate Punks from Portland

I like pirates, punk, and Portland and Rum Rebellion is a band that includes all three of these things, so I'm going to have to go check this show out. Also on the bill for Saturday are The Bloodclots, Cyanide Destruct, and The Hammered Grunts.
Trivia NIght at Ye Ol' Pequliar in Ballard
The key to winning at bar trivia is to cheat. No, actually, it's to have a good team with diverse knowledge. You need a sports person, a history person, a world politics person, a US politics person, and an arts and entertainment and pop culture person. With that team, you have a winning combination that's sure to win you glorious prizes at bar trivia night.
Seattlest is hosting trivia night at Ye Ol' Pequliar at 8pm tonight. It's $5 per team (teams can be up to 5 people). Get there before 8pm to make sure your team gets a table.
Georgetown Liquor Company
Last Friday night, my first stop of a full evening included grabbing a beer in Georgetown at the Georgetown Liquor Company. Before I tell you about this wonderful restaurant/bar, I want to share a tidbit of information about myself:
I am the proud owner of an Atari 2600, and I am a skilled retro gamer. My stealth motor skills, vivid imagination (which is used to interpret pixilated graphics), and years of practice have made me one of the best retro gamers in the world.
If you would like to challenge me, meet me at the Georgetown Liquor Company and I DARE you to attempt to beat me at any one of the many retro games available to play. The Georgetown Liquor Company has two Atari 2600 consoles and over 70 Atari games. They also have Nintendo and Super Nintendo. Download the complete list of games. The restaurant/bar also has arcade games including Defender and Ms. Pac-Man.
Aside from retro games, the Georgetown Liquor Company has developed a reputation for its excellent food. The entire menu is 100% vegetarian, with many vegan options. Non-vegetarians, do not be scared-off by the vegetarian menu, as the menu items are hearty and filling.
The icing on the cake of the Georgetown Liquor Company experience is you can enjoy their food, ambiance, and beer or cocktail while watching a sci-fi movie every Sunday night, starting at 8pm. Give them a call to find out what is showing this week.
